Lions Take Over Lake Placid

The 12UAA and 14UA Lions are wrapping up their season in style, traveling up north to the Winter Olympic Village in Lake Placid, New York, playing in the CAN/AM Challenge Cup Tournament. Players participated in the opening ceremonies on-site where the 1980 Lake Placid Olympic Winter Games were held, on the same ice surface where Team USA captured the Gold Medal during its "Miracle on Ice" run. Best of luck to all the Lions players in creating memories that will last a lifetime.

NCHL 2024-2025 Season Registration Now Open

Registration is now open for the Nassau County Hockey League (NCHL), Long Island’s premier ice hockey league. The 2024-2025 season will begin in late September with evaluations, and will end in early March with the NCHL Playoffs & Championship.

Click here to access the NCHL 2024-2025 Application and begin the registration process.

Note that the deadline for registration has been extended through Monday, September 30th. Also, due to low registration numbers, the NCHL will NOT be fielding a 14U Division this season. We will only be accepting registrations for 6U through 12U age groups.

The NCHL program consists of clinics, a non-check league schedule, team practices, exhibition games, and culminates with the NCHL Tournament. All games and practices will be held at Cantiague Park (Hicksville), Grant Park (Hewlett-outdoors), Christopher Morley Park (Roslyn-outdoors), and Northwell Health Center at Eisenhower Park (East Meadow-indoors).

Weeknight games for 10U & 12U players will be scheduled Monday through Thursday at either Grant Park or Christopher Morley Park, and early morning games will be held on the weekends at Northwell Health Ice Center at Eisenhower Park and Cantiague Park. Each team will be scheduled for two to four ice slots per week.

For our 6U/8U players, our Mite Initiation Program is held Sunday mornings at Cantiague from 11:00 a.m.-Noon, with games run by coaches on Saturday mornings at Christopher Morley Park (weather pending and beginning approximately December 2024).

Players of all skill levels, from beginner to experienced, are welcome to join the NCHL. Our coaches will evaluate players in late September, and select teams based on their collaborative evaluations. The primary goal for the NCHL is to create a fun hockey development environment for all, and foster the growth of your child’s skill set and the great sport of hockey.

Cost for our 6U/8U Mite Initiation Program is $420 per player, and $565 for our 10U, 12U & 14U age groups (in addition to your registration with USA Hockey for the 2024-2025 season).

For more information on the NCHL 2024-2025 season, click here to begin the application process or reach out to Peter Zsamboky via email at PZsamboky@nassaucountyny.gov with any questions or concerns.

What's in the Box!

The mysterious parcels that arrived a few weeks ago at Cantiague Park have been unveiled. The program's new four-sided scoreboard will hang at center ice for all to enjoy for years to come.

16UAA Lions Capture Regional Silver Sticks Championship

Congratulations to the Nassau County 16U Lions team for capturing the 2024 International Silver Sticks Regional Championship in West Chester, Pennsylvania.

The 16U Lions, led by Coaches Angelo Les and Vincent DiMatteo, edged the Pittsburgh Aviators 3-2 in the finals game Sunday afternoon to punch their ticket as Mid-Atlantic Region Champs for the right play in Toronto, Ontario this coming January.

The Lions began their run with a 3-0 shutout over the Wissahickon Warriors. This was followed on day two with a 4-4 tie with the Chester County Cougars and another shutout victory Saturday afternoon, another 3-0 win this time over Team Philadelphia. Sunday morning’s semifinal game found the Lions again matching up against the Chester County Cougars. The Lions pulled off a 4-3 win in overtime to advance to the finals where they outlasted the Pittsburgh Aviators 3-2.

The International Silver Stick Hockey Association has been promoting "Citizenship and International Goodwill" since its inception in 1956. Founded by Jack Kinsella, the tournament began with a simple exhibition game and has grown into one of the largest minor hockey tournaments in North America. Each year, more than 65,000 players and coaches participate in 52 regional tournaments across the continent.

Two Honored With Inaugural 'Pride of the Lions' Award

On February 25th, the Nassau County Lions introduced the first ever “Pride of the Lions” Award, an honor given to players who have spent their entire youth hockey career (8u-18u) as a member of the Nassau County Lions.

The inaugural award was presented to 18u co-captains Miles Hochman and John Dunn, both of whom began their respective travel hockey careers back in 2011 as 8U players.

In addition to this, Miles and John were presented with a citation recognizing their achievement from Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman.

Pictured here are the Hochman family, the Dunn family, Nassau County Director of Hockey Mark LaMarr, Nassau Lions President Scott Gerstner, Administrator Eric C. Peck, bookended by the boys' first coach Rob Hoppe and last coach Ian Clugston.

Nassau County Hockey

Nassau County Hockey's Mission and Vision
The Nassau County Hockey Program operates under the auspices of the Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation, and Museums and exists to serve the interests of the residents of Nassau County.  Over the last quarter century, we have built a strong tradition of quality hockey programming.  Our staff has brought us to the respected position we now hold in the hockey community.  We are proud of that heritage and are committed to achieving even greater success.

Our Mission Is To Become The Best Hockey Program In The Nation
By the best, we mean a rapidly growing organization that provides innovative programming of the highest caliber for the youth of Nassau County.  Our goals go far beyond merely developing the athletic ability of our participants.  We want to help develop the character and interpersonal skills of each of our boys and girls in such a way that participation in one of the Nassau County Hockey Programs will benefit them long past the time when they hang up their skates.  Our aim is to develop first-class citizens for our county, as well as first-class athletes for our hockey teams.

People Are Our Most Important Asset
It is important that we:

  • Attract, motivate, and retain the most talented people in our hockey community for both our professional and volunteer staff.
  • Provide the opportunity for all employees and volunteers to develop their potential and make the best use of their abilities.
  • Promote mutual trust and respect for each other.
  • Practice open and timely two-way communications with the expectation and confidence that well-informed people will do the right thing.

Excellence Must Become A Way Of Life
This demands that we:

  • Define excellence as performing up to the public’s expectations and then doing more.
  • Maintain a dynamic growth-oriented environment that promotes teamwork and encourages individual initiative.
  • Provide leadership that will motivate both employees and volunteers to practice excellence in every dimension of their assigned responsibilities.
  • Pursue functional excellence as an integral part of our total program performance.
  • Take pride in all the programs and services that we provide to the citizens of Nassau County.

We believe that if we live and work by these values, we will establish Nassau County as the premier hockey program in the United States of America.
